Following the news that a senior Leicestershire magistrate resigned after being suspended for attempting to pay a court fine for an asylum seeker, the subject has been the source of heavy debate on the Mercury's social media channels.
65-year-old Nigel Allcoat from Burbage was investigated by one of the highest judicial bodies in the country when he attempted to pay the £180 court costs of a penniless defendant when he appeared before him three weeks ago.
