An overwhelming majority of Leicestershire Police officers want to be issued with mesh hoods to place over the heads of prisoners who spit at them.A survey by Leicestershire Police Federation has found that 96 per cent believe 'spit-guards' would protect them from diseases such as hepatitis which can be carried in saliva or blood in saliva.A total of 667 of the force's 1,700 officers took part in the poll.
